The short answer

The difference in three sentences.

Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, clear, self-healing urethane film that physically absorbs rock chips and scratches; a ceramic coating is a thin, hard, slick layer that adds gloss and makes washing easier but does not stop chips. If you drive the interstate a lot or have a new car, PPF protects the paint; if you want shine and easier care, a coating does that. Many owners put PPF on the front end and a coating on the rest of the car.

When PPF is the right call.

When a ceramic coating is enough.

Doing both

The most common combination is PPF on the impact areas (Full Front) and a coating on everything else. It also costs less as a bundle: PPF + ceramic saves $500, and PPF + ceramic + full-car tint saves $1,000. Before any coating goes over film, we check it’s compatible with the film’s warranty.

FAQ

Good questions.

Is PPF or ceramic coating better?

Neither is better overall; they do different jobs. PPF is a thick, self-healing film that absorbs rock chips and scratches. A ceramic coating is a thin, slick layer for gloss and easier washing that won’t stop chips. If chips are your worry, choose PPF; if gloss and easy care are, choose a coating; many owners do both.

Which costs more, PPF or ceramic coating?

PPF. At our studio Full Front PPF starts from $2,400 and Full Body from $6,000 (coupe), while our 5-year ceramic coating package starts from $1,000 for a coupe, paint correction included.

Can you put ceramic coating on top of PPF?

Often, but check first. Gtechniq says Crystal Serum Light can go over PPF, though it generally recommends a film-specific coating, and Pure PPF’s warranty excludes problems caused by coatings it hasn’t approved. We’ll recommend the right approach for your film.

Should I get PPF or ceramic coating in Florida?

Both help with Florida conditions in different ways. PPF guards the front end against I-75 debris and is the only one of the two that stops chips. A coating helps the paint shrug off love bugs, sprinkler spots and bird droppings.

Is there a discount for doing both?

Yes. Any PPF package plus our 5-year ceramic coating saves $500; add full-car window tint and the saving becomes $1,000 in total.
