The short answer
Ceramic tint in three sentences.
“Regular” tint usually means dyed film, which mainly darkens the glass, or carbon film; ceramic tint is non-metallic film built to cut heat and UV without having to be very dark. In Florida, where the front side windows must stay at 28% light or lighter, that’s why ceramic is usually worth it: you get the heat rejection at a legal shade. The tint we install is 3M Ceramic IR, which rejects up to 64% of total solar energy, up to 93% of glare and 99.9% of UV, with a lifetime warranty.
| Dyed film | Carbon film | Ceramic film (3M Ceramic IR) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it’s made for | Darkening the glass for looks and privacy | Darker look with some heat control | Heat and UV rejection without having to go dark |
| Heat control | Mostly comes from going darker | Better than dyed, generally | Up to 64% of total solar energy rejected |
| UV | Varies by film | Varies by film | 99.9% blocked |
| Phones and GPS | No metal, no interference | No metal, no interference | Non-metallized, no interference |
| Over time | Can fade or discolor | Generally holds its color | Lifetime warranty at our studio |
| Do we install it? | No | No | Yes: every shade, 5% to 70% |
Is ceramic tint worth it in Florida?
- The law caps how dark you can go. Front side windows must let in at least 28% of light. With dyed film, a legal shade does little for heat; ceramic does the heat work at that shade.
- Cars sit in the sun. Beach lots, school pick-up lines and open parking lots bake a cabin fast. Less heat through the glass means the A/C catches up sooner.
- UV is year-round. 99.9% UV blocked helps protect skin, leather and dashboards.
- No signal trade-off. 3M Ceramic IR is non-metallized, so phones, GPS and Bluetooth work normally.
- It’s built to last. Our 3M ceramic tint carries a lifetime warranty.
When basic tint might be enough.
If all you want is privacy on the back glass and heat isn’t a concern, a basic dyed film can do that job. We don’t install it, and we’ll say so. Many newer SUVs and trucks already have dark factory rear glass; for those, two front windows in 3M ceramic film (from $249.99) matched to the factory shade within the legal limit is a popular choice.
Does ceramic tint have to be dark?
No. The shade is a choice about looks and privacy; every shade we offer, from 5% to 70%, is 3M Ceramic IR. Read tint percentages explained and the Florida tint law guide before you choose.
